StoryLab 2017 Workshop Schedule

Workshop Day 1

10.00 – 10.45 Introductions and outlining of the workshop

  • Welcome the participants
  • Background of the local workshop lead instructor
  • Introduction of all other instructors (work, research, films)
  • Explain the Research project
  • The 3 days of the workshop: explain schedule & goal of developing a personal story idea to step outline stage
  • After the workshop: website, facebook, instagram, twitter – to create interactive engagement during and after the workshop; to archive our process; to further develop projects in collaboration with local and international workshop participants and instructors

10.45 – 11.15 Break & Social Media Integration

  • Participants join the FB group (and other social media?)
  • Participants upload link to a work sample to the FB page

11.15 – 1.00  Round table: participant introductions

  • 5 minutes per participants (including work samples)
  • the goal of this roundtable is to get a general sense of the work of the participants, their situation, challenges and aspirations.

1.00 – 2.00   Lunch Break

2.00 – 3.00   The visual interview: exploring story impulses

  • In 4 groups (each led by one instructor), we first talk about the themes participants are interested in exploring and what stories they want to tell and/or have been telling
  • We then ask participants to film a 3-minute interview for each participant, answering the same questions: a) What themes are you interested in exploring as a storyteller? b) What stories have you been telling and/or want to tell?
  • Interviews have to be uploaded to the FB page

3.00 – 4.45   Round table: emerging themes and common opportunities, aspirations, challenges

  • Watch the 3-minute interviews
  • Discuss emerging themes from introductions and visual interviews, focusing on common opportunities, aspirations and challenges and understanding of context and forms.

4.45 – 5.00   Social Media Integration

  • Participants to upload 3 themes that emerged during the afternoon

Workshop Day 2

10.00 – 1.00  Creativity and Story

  • Interactive lecture/seminar led by Erik Knudsen
  • In-class practical exercise in which each participant develops a new idea (up to step outline) with interactive participation of researchers and other participants

1.00 – 2.00    Lunch Break

2.00 – 4.50    Individual idea development tutorials and independent development

  • Each instructor has tutorials with one quarter of the participants
  • Each participant should have 2 tutorials with his/her instructor (e.g. if we have 16 participants, each instructor has two 20-minute tutorials with 4 participants)
  • During these tutorials, participants either develop the ideas they developed during the morning session OR a project they are working on outside of the workshop already
  • The goal of the tutorials is to develop a step outline for the participants’ stories
  • Participants will work on these step outlines independently outside of the tutorials during the afternoon session
  • Instructors to take research notes about the emerging stories during the tutorials

4.50 – 5.00    Announce Homework & Social Media Integration

  • Participants should continue to work on their step outlines after the feedback they received during the afternoon tutorials
  • The step outlines should be uploaded to the FB page before tomorrow’s morning session

Workshop Day 3

9.00 – 11.30   Presentation of developed ideas

  • Participants present step outlines (bullet points on white board)
  • Other participants and instructors give feedback after the presentation
  • 10 minutes per participant

11.30 – 12.00  Round table: discussion of developed ideas

  • Summarizing discussion of ideas & themes that emerged

12.00 – 2.00   Lunch Break & Social Media Integration

  • Upload 3 points, describing what you got out of this morning’s discussion in relation to your work

2.00 – 3.00    Beyond the Workshop

  • Introduction to working with the workshop website and FB page
  • Please follow our next workshop in Accra on FB
  • The FB page is a place to collaborate among each other and participants of other workshops
  • Continue to share ideas and develop your stories through feedback on FB page
  • The research team will continue to engage with you in the form of questions on the FB page (and continue to provide feedback on your projects)

3.00 – 4.30    Summarising workshop experience and learning

  • Each instructor & participant to share their experience and what they have learned from the workshop
  • These short statements should lead to discussions
  • Instructors to take research notes
